The Royal Thai Police have announced a 30-day crackdown on Thailand’s tourist areas of Pattaya and Phuket to give the impression they care about foreign tourists’ safety.
The Pattaya and Phuket crackdown show started with a parade, as do most big events in Thailand, but will do little or nothing to decrease crime, will show a few glorified arrests in the areas (arresting ladyboys in Pattaya to be released 5 minutes later after a 100 baht fine is the norm), and then will be declared a huge success.
This Pattaya and Phuket crackdown will be just like the Seven Dangerous Days of Thai New Year in Thailand and fail miserably.
See, the big problem is Crimes Against Foreign Tourists Damaging The Reputation Of Thailand and Thailand must protect its precious image especially in Pattaya and Phuket.
So, Thailand’s answer to all the Pattaya and Phuket crime of late, murders, muggings, and rapes, is to give the appearance that they care about foreign tourists by having the Royal Thai Police Put On Show Of Force In Phuket. I guess just adding the Safety Zone banners in Pattaya and Phuket didn’t work.
So, on Friday we had the Royal Thai Police parade highlights Phuket, Pattaya tourism-safety campaign to show all the foreign tourists how safe Pattaya and Phuket really are and that the Thai Government cares about tourists’ safety. HAHAHA.
PHUKET: Royal Thai Police stormed Phuket’s party street, Soi Bangla, with an 800 officer strong parade yesterday to highlight a 30-day safety campaign aimed at slashing the criminal activity in Phuket and Pattaya.
So, Phuket has time to waste staging a parade when it would be better to have these 800 Thai Police out patrolling the streets after dark. But, this is Thailand and face is more important than reality.
“We expect the 30-day project to decrease the criminal activity in Phuket by 50 per cent, and significantly increase how safe tourists feel on our island,” Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Arun Kleawwatee said.
Since the Thai Government in Pattaya and Phuket will be providing numbers that no one will care to verify. there will be claims that crime decreased by more than 50%. The Thai Government just doesn’t understand the power of social media and how one incident, like the rape of the Dutch model in Krabi and the Evil Man From Krabi video, can cause more damage than all the dog and pony shows that the Thai Police in Pattaya and Phuket have to counter. Foreign tourists are not so easily fooled.
By making a significant effort to boost safety in both Phuket and Pattaya, the Royal Thai Police hope to improve the overall image of these two important tourist destinations, Col Arun said.
This is the problem. Pattaya and Phuket are more concerned about image than tourist safety.
“In the past there has been a great deal of negative news about incidents happening to tourists in Phuket and Pattaya. To counter this, the Royal Thai Police decided to send more police officers and police volunteers into these areas,” Col Arun explained.
This is said after every major incident in Pattaya and Phuket or anywhere else in Thailand, but then there are more and more incidents. All talk and no action.
Issues to be addressed included a crackdown on drugs, prostitution, burglary, sexual assault and any illegal operations by local government officers, Deputy National Police General Pansiri Prapawat said.
WOW! I guess this means that there will be no Thais at all in Pattaya and Phuket and then no tourists in Pattaya and Phuket.
“We will also be patrolling the high risk areas, as well as checking restaurants and entertainment venues for drugs, prostitution and teen gangs,” he added.
Prostitution? How can this be? Prostitution is illegal in Thailand. Those girls working in the Pattaya and Phuket bars cannot be prostitutes – they must be tour guides or language instructors. They most certainly cannot be prostitutes because if they were prostitutes they would damage the image of the Kingdom of Thailand.
Those who attended last night’s parade included Royal Thai Police Assistant Commissioner-General Chalermkiat Srivorakan, Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut and Phuket Provincial Police Commander Choti Chavalviwat.

Gen Pansiri said solving problems surrounding tourism safety was paramount.
Paramount to protecting the image of Thailand. Same mantras over and over and nothing ever changes except to get worse in Pattaya and Phuket.
“In order to move toward the Asean Economic Community we have to start resolving issues that tourists are facing and boost tourists’ confidence in our effectiveness,” he said.
So, the first step would be to fire each and every Thai Police Officer and then every Thai Government Official in Pattaya and Phuket and start with a fresh batch of recruits who don’t know the corruption ropes yet. Then, get rid of every jet-ski in Pattaya and Phuket, every beach umbrella and chair, every beach vendor, and everyone that belongs to the taxi and tuk-tuk mafia.
The Pattaya and Phuket Thai Police need to learn that having a parade or putting up Safety Zone banners makes them look totally ridiculous in the eyes of the world. Actions speak louder than bullshit. If the Royal Thai Police would actually patrol the Pattaya and Phuket tourist areas, arrest crooks, and be transparent afterwards with the arrest and conviction, then maybe the world would have a smidgen of faith in the Thai Police.
As it stands now, the Thai Police are a joke locally and world-wide. All they are good for is intimidation, accepting bribes, and ignoring the law unless it just so happens to suit their whim of the day.
Pattaya and Phuket attract some of the dregs of the earth and nothing will change until the Royal Thai Police actually get serious and conduct a real crackdown instead of a show for the press.
