The Tourism Authority of Thailand is about to embark on a new mission for Thailand – that of security monitor to ensure the safety of foreign tourists.
Hopefully, you have stopped laughing by now and can continue reading about the idiocy of Chiang Mai relying on the Tourism Authority of Thailand and their broke-dick web site to monitor security.
Why the city of Chiang Mai is relying on the Tourism Authority of Thailand to monitor security goes beyond rational thinking.
But, then again, nothing is rational at the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The monitoring by the Tourism Authority of Thailand is going to be at the main TAT web site – TourismThailand.org – once you get past the flash intro, you will see that it is a cluttered jumble of outdated, inaccurate, and incorrect information. Here a few examples when you scroll down to the bottom of the page and click some of the links:
- Songkran – takes you to the Hua Hin Jazz festival that happened a couple of days ago
- Loi Krathong – gives information about Loi Krathong 2010
- Phi Takhon – gives information about Pee Takhon from July 2011
- Rocket Restival – info from May 2010
- Long tail boat races – from October 2011
So, how can the Tourism Authority of Thailand maintain 24/7 security monitoring when they cannot even keep a web site up to date?
TTR Weekly reports, in Beefing up Security, that the knuckleheads in Chiang Mai expect the Tourism Authority of Thailand to monitor a bunch of Closed Circuit TV cameras and keep tourists in Chiang Mai safe. Absolutely Ridiculous.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is a totally incompetent organization that does not know how to market and promote Thailand so why does Chiang Mai think they will make good security monitors?
The Thai Police, the Thai Tourist Police, and the Thai Police Volunteers cannot ensure the safety of foreign tourists and that is their primary job.
“To raise security and safety, TAT is supporting the set up of CCTV surveillance at popular tourist spots such as Tha Phae area and the city’s walking street. The project should be ready in two months.”
Not sure if this means that the Tourism Authority of Thailand supports this from afar, or if they are financially backing it. And, if you know Thailand, CCTV set-ups here rarely work, are not monitored, have shitty images, and are basically worthless.
CCTV cameras will be used as a deterrent against violent crime in tourist districts and could possibly reduce theft and bag snatching.
CCTV deters crimes like the electric chair deters murders. I would like to see any data that proves that thieves and murderers look around for cameras before committing a crime.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand should have hired my buddy, Tom, from Isaan-Live, to set up the cameras. He has a web cam set up around the clock and also does live, streaming video from his tablet. His videos and cams actually work, unlike what I am sure will be a major fail for the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
But, here is the best part!!
Once the cameras are operational, travellers and residents will be able to gain a real-time situation report on TAT’s website www.tourismthailand.org, he said.
HUH? We get to watch too? So, this is just a live webcam and not a real network of CCTV connected to a monitoring center that is manned 24/7 with real security personnel. I see now. This is just more bullshit from the Tourism Authority of Thailand to give the impression of safety and security when it will do nothing at all.
Plus, having it on the Tourism Authority of Thailand main web site is really stupid since there are a bazillion things there now and most are out of date, incorrect, and worthless.
“The website should help us to track fraud and tour operator scams as well as troublesome Song-Teaws that are over charging tourists.”
Should, but won’t. This just continues to keep the real Thai Police at their desks doing nothing and relies on the Tourism Authority of Thailand to make it look like the Thai Government really cares about tourism safety. The Tourism Authority of Thailand knows about the fraud and scams, and has known for years and years, and does nothing. This will not change.
Earlier in mid-June, Chiang Mai governor Panadda Disakul instructed security units to beef up measures to improve confidence.
To improve confidence – not to ensure tourists’ safety. This is about face and giving the impression of doing something when, in reality, you and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are doing nothing at all.
Police patrol units have been increased particularly during the weekends when there is a large influx of tourists. There are more than 200 volunteers who patrol the areas and report to police officers if they witness tourist related incidents.
So, if there are 200 volunteers, then, they are not police patrol units. And, I seriously doubt that there are 200 volunteers out there every weekend doing the work of the Thai Police. Plus, how long do you think it will take for the bad guys to figure out that they only have to rip off, mug, or murder tourists during the week to avoid the influx of “police patrols”. More bullshit from the Tourism Authority of Thailand the Chiang Mai Government.
This is part of the damage control from mysterious deaths in Chiang Mai and Koh Phi Phi, the murder of an Australian travel agent, Michelle Smith, in Phuket, and the every present muggings, jet-ski scams, and ladyboy rip-offs that have been going on for years and nothing is ever done since the Thai Police are in on the scams.
Another show from the Tourism Authority of Thailand that will accomplish nothing. I can’t wait to see the live CCTV broadcast form the Tourism Authority of Thailand web site.
